Pope Francis on the Silver Screen

Out this month are two new films that feature Pope Francis in ways that help us better know his teachings and personality.

Beyond the Sun

Credited by Crux as "the first time a pope has ever appeared in a feature film",  this film's proceeds will directly benefit Los Hogares de Cristo and El Almendro, Argentian charities that provide aid to at-risk children and young adults. I haven't yet screened this film, but look forward to seeing it as it's now available for digital download.

Synopsis: Written and directed by Graciela Rodriguez Gilio, BEYOND THE SUN, is a modern day tale of hope, faith and courage based on stories from the Bible. Featuring an awe-inspiring appearance by His Holiness Pope Francis, the film chronicles the adventures of four young friends in search of God. This uplifting story is intended to spiritually engage and encourage audiences of all ages to live their best life, make good choices and help others. Distributed by AMBI Distribution, BEYOND THE SUN, will be available for purchase across multiple platforms including iTunes, Amazon, and TUGG.

Pope Francis: A Man of His Word

Opening wide this weekend, Pope Francis: A Man of His Word is noted documentarian Wim Wenders' look at the teachings and philosophies of Pope Francis.

Synopsis: "Pope Francis - A Man of His Word" is intended to be a personal journey with Pope Francis, rather than a biographical documentary about him. The pope's ideas and his message are central to this documentary, which sets out to present his work of reform and his answers to today's global questions.

60 Minutes took an early look at the making of this film, which captures Pope Francis in an extremely open and unguarded conversation discussing the major points of his pontificate. I enjoyed up close footage of our Holy Father's travels around the world, including his travels to the United States. Find reviews from Steven Greydanus at National Catholic Register here and Catholic News Service here. Your enjoyment of this documentary will most likely hinge on your thoughts about Pope Francis since at its heart the film is an intimate look at his personal spirituality.

For the record, I loved it.
