I just had to share some of the amazing fun and grace I experienced at this past weekend’s Archdiocese of Los Angeles Religious Education Congress. This was my fourth Congress – it gets better every year. Kudos to the amazing staff of the Office of Religious Education for the accomplishment of providing spiritual nourishment to close to 40,000 Catholics from around the globe, including livestreaming of much of the event.

It’s always a true honor to speak at Congress and I want to thank the staff who selected me and assisted with the process of teaching so many dedicated folks. You can find the slides from my talks online here and order copies of the recordings of my talks here (soon). In the mean time, I wanted to share a few photos of all of the fun we enjoyed over the weekend.

Yesterday, I shared with you Part 1 of the two part series recently recorded by KNXT in the Diocese of Fresno, featuring my friend Carson Weber and me speaking on the basics of Catholic social media. Remember that the emphasis in these programs is on giving an overview and also introducing basic concepts to people who may not even know the basics of Facebook and Twitter.

Indeed, I have certifiable evidence that we may — in fact — have reached our target audience. Yesterday, I emailed a link to the videos to my immediate family members (and no, most of them do not read this blog). I was pleasantly surprised to receive the following response from my non-Tweeting husband:

Those videos turned out really good.
For the first time, I understand the twitter # and @

Vindication!

Today, I’m pleased to share Part 2 with you. In this video, Carson and I discuss the USCCB’s social media initiatives, the Bishops and Bloggers meeting, the CNMC and our own roles in using the tools of social media in the New Evangelization.

Video Link

I ask your help in sharing this video via your own social networking platforms. We hope that they will be helpful tools for those looking to further understand the Church’s use of these technologies. A good response to the Youtube videos will also prove that we need even more mainstream (television) attention to the discussion of our use of social media in the Church. So thanks, in advance, for your help in spreading them to others.

Today, I’m happy to share the first of two television episodes recently recorded in my home Diocese of Fresno at our diocesan owned television station, KNXT. My fellow guest for this program is the always awesome Carson Weber. Carson and I met with “Forum for a Better Understanding” host Jim Grant for two episodes on the Church and Social Media.

In this first episode, we give a broad overview of some of the means of communicating online via tools like Facebook, Twitter, and blogs. You’ll also see a few snapshots from the Vatican Bloggers Meeting and get an update on the Vatican’s youtube presence and — of course — our Tweeting Pope @Pontifex!

This “Forum” program is typically a multi-faith conversation, which explains the huge Star of David behind Carson’s head. It was our goal with this and the companion program (which I’ll share tomorrow) to educate the average person in the pew about what’s happening in Catholic new media. I’m grateful to Jim Grant, to Carson, (to my hairstylist!) and to KNXT for the opportunity! Tune back in tomorrow for Part 2.

I’ve never met my friend TJ Burdick in person, but he’s the kind of guy I’d love to know “in real life”. He’s a person who not only dreams big and believes he can change the world, but actually does stuff to make that change happen! So when TJ wrote me and invited me to be part of One Body, Many Blogs: A Guide for Christian Bloggers, a special project that combines both Catholic blogging and helping a terrific organization to raise need funds, I jumped at the chance to be involved.

Here’s the blueprint: a group of Catholic bloggers were each asked the question:

What are the “ten commandments” that Christian bloggers should keep in mind while pressing on in their digital mission?

Their answers are diverse and extremely helpful for anyone who shares the charism of blogging. Each response was treated it as if it were a blogpost in length, voice, style and content. As you will see, each blogger has created a unique and informative response that will provide you with ideas on how to develop your own particular voice through the communal blogging charism by which you feel called to participate in.

The writers involved in this project are:

Brandon Vogt (BrandonVogt.com)

Deacon Greg Kandra (The Deacon’s Bench)

Devin Rose (St. Joseph’s Vanguard)

Kevin Knight (New Advent)

Lisa Hendey (CatholicMom.com)

Marc Barnes (BadCatholic and 1flesh.org)

Susan Windley-Daoust (Ironic Catholic)

San Juan Diego Academy

And here’s the best news about this cool project. All of the proceeds of the book — which actually will only cost you $1.99 — go to benefit the San Juan Diego Academy, a Catholic school that serves immigrant children and is located in Wyoming, Michigan. It currently serves over 160 students annually and provides them with the academic and spiritual nourishment they need to build the the Catholic Church and the future of our nation. Their extended school day allows the students for opportunities to be exposed to the English language while still retaining their native cultures. On top of that, they are molded by the sacraments celebrating mass every Tuesday with several Priests and deacons from the area. San Juan Diego succeeds through the generous support of the larger community in the form of tuition assistance scholarships. Parents are given an opportunity to reduce tuition costs through service hours which benefit the school.

So what do you need to do — head over now and immediately spend $1.99 to learn more about blogging and its role in the New Evangelization from some key players in the Catholic blogosphere (and me). The amazing thing is that if the blog audiences of each of the writers on One Body, Many Blogs spent less than the cost of a cup of coffee to purchase the Kindle version of this book (and you don’t even need a Kindle, you can read it on your computer), we could drastically improve the lives of the students and families served by the San Juan Diego Academy.
Notre Dame, IN—Building on the popularity of Lisa M. Hendey’s The Handbook for Catholic Moms and A Book of Saints for Catholic Moms and her award-winning website CatholicMom.com, Ave Maria Press is pleased to announce the launch of CatholicMom.com Books.

In the spirit of the New Evangelization, and at the forefront of Catholic new media, Hendey and her fellow moms and bloggers celebrate all things faith, family, and fun from a thoroughly Catholic perspective. Through the triumphs and tedium of the everyday, CatholicMom.com Books will encourage and support moms in their vocations, showing how their Catholic faith can be the vital center of their experience.

Ave Maria Press’s CatholicMom.com Books will include 1-2 books per year, starting in September 2012 with A Catholic Mother’s Companion to Pregnancy by popular blogger and author Sarah Reinhard. Reinhard’s book accompanies expectant mothers from conception to baptism with weekly reflections and prayers rooted in the mysteries of the Rosary. Due out in 2013 will be a book of Catholic baby names by Patrice Fagnant-MacArthur and one by Marge Fenelon on eight Marian virtues for motherhood.

Hendey will play an active role in selecting new authors and books for this exciting new series, contributing a foreword for each title and promoting the books on her site and through the thousands who follow her on social media networks.

Hendey’s website has seen exponential growth since its inception in 2000 and now welcomes over half a million unique visitors per year: she is the original Catholic mommy blogger. This vibrant online community provides a friendly forum and digital meeting place for Catholic women to exchange stories, experiences, and prayers, and CatholicMom.com Books will be a treasury of wisdom from many of Hendey’s well-known and trusted online contributors and others.

You can read the article online here. To be quoted along with Fr. Robert Barron, Mary Kay Hoal, Matt Warner and other “wired” Catholics is a real honor.

I recently subscribed to the print edition of the Register and can’t wait to begin receiving it regularly in my mailbox! While I’ve been an online reader of the Register for years, a print subscription to the paper is a great way to support their mission and to send a strong signal that we need and will support great Catholic media. To learn more about subscribing, click here.

I am so happy to be one of the contributors for this book. Brandon has assembled an amazing team of writers who are on the cutting edge of using technology at the service of the Word. His work on this project is so inspirational, as not only has he created an amazing book and website, but also “100% of the royalties from the book will go toward establishing school computer labs throughout the Archdiocese of Mombasa, Kenya. In addition to providing computers, the kids will be trained in computer literacy skills – their ticket to the “digital continent”.”

Stay tuned for more information on the book, which will be released in early August, and please take a few moments to enjoy the book trailer video below.
